This is an old, used version of the traditional Makonde "challenge" mask. It belonged to a member of the male- only warrior society. Such masks were used in initiations, meetings of the secret society, and funerals. Human hair was placed on top to make the mask appear more realistic. The mask was worn on top of the dancer's head. The dancer's face was covered with an opaque cloth. This is a fine, museum-quality piece.
