Jewelry from Africa
Myrrh Necklace
Multi-strand, fragrant necklace made from the gum resin of the
myrrh bush. Myrrh was once as valuable as gold, and one of the
gifts given to Jesus by the Magi. In Mali, young women wore
the strands around their waist to increase sexuality. Now the
resin is used in perfume and incense.

Cross of Agadez
Amulets from Agadez, a city in North Africa. Originally worn
only by Taureg men, they were given by a father to his son at
puberty, in a ceremony ending with the words, "My son, I give
you the four corners of the world, for no one can know where
he may die." Cast from silver-based metal or old British coins,
they are believed to bring good fortune and health. Currently
worn throughout Africa by both sexes as adornment and good luck
amulets.
