Cultural Diversity Training

For immediate release: November 21, 1996

Allegheny County Commissioners have approved a proposal by introspec, inc., headed by Dr. Ralph Proctor, to provide cultural diversity training for all staff at Children and Youth Services. "This training is a much-needed prerequisite for improving case practice and service delivery," said Commissioner Larry Dunn. "The purpose of the training is to insure that CYS staff become familiar with and respectful of CYS clients who come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and to insure that all employees develop the same cultural sensitivity and respect toward culturally different staff persons."br> All agency staff will participate in multiple sessions of small group training. Earlier this year, CYS sent out over 200 letters of intent describing the training, and a competitive bidding and review process followed. Dr. Proctor, who has had 25 years of experience, has done similar work locally at universities, for school districts, and at companies. Proctor is also a well-known local media personality and academic, and is familiar with Pittsburgh's communities. "The training," stated Proctor, "will lead to a greater cultural understanding both of the client and of one's self."
"Providing cultural competence training to our staff is critical to our plan for improving the agency," stated CYS Director, Marc Cherna. "We want CYS to be more accountable, responsive, and sensitive to client needs."
